Women’s Bottoms 101: A Guide to Different Types of Skirts and Pants

Fashion has always been a big part of our human history. People everywhere in the world care about what they wear and how they look. This is especially true about women. It may have been harder in the past to find the right pair of pants or the proper skirt for their body type, but not anymore. Nowadays, we have hundreds of choices for women’s bottoms.

A-Line

The A-line skirt is one of the most popular ones. It’s perfect for women who have a pear-shaped body. It accentuates their curves and makes their body look symmetrical. It’s usually knee-length and works with almost every type of fabric. The thing that makes it flattering is the shape.

Coming from the waist, it flares up gently and it doesn’t cling to the hips. The shape makes it one of the most comfortable and flattering bottoms for women. It’s easy to walk in and there’s no need for slits anywhere. They generally have a fitted waistline that can be high, low or elasticised.

Box Pleat

There are several pleat skirt variations. The box pleat is just one of them. This one is essentially a skirt where two sides fold and meet each other to form the box part. This pattern continues all around the skirt until the whole skirt is evenly pleated. Box pleat skirts are always made of thicker, heavier materials. This gives them volume and a nice shape.

High Waist

Just like the name suggests, this skirt has a high waist. The waistband can be elastic or flat and when it’s combined with the fullness of the skirt, you get a very fun shape. The waistband is usually the main decorative element. If you decide to wear high-waist skirts, pair them with a fitted, tucked-in shirt. This will give you a flattering silhouette.

Pencil

Pencil skirts are the go-to option for women in the business world. They give you a very professional look that emits confidence. Their length can vary, and some can taper inwards at the knee. Pencil skirts can be made from many fabrics. But if the material isn’t stretchy, there needs to be a slit at the back or on the side. This will make it easier to walk and climb stairs, especially if you’re wearing heels.

Mermaid

The mermaid skirt has a very distinctive look. It gives the woman an hourglass shape and has a tailpiece that flares at the bottom. It’s often used in wedding dresses but it’s also an inspiration for many evening gowns for special occasions. This is a timeless type of skirt that looks classy and elegant.

Bubble

The bubble skirt has a very recognisable look. It looks puffy at the bottom because the fabric is gathered into a band. This band is tucked under the skirt, and it creates a puffed-up, bubble-shaped skirt. They use a lot of fabric because there are 2 skirts. A straight one underneath and a bubble one at the top. This is a trend that comes and goes. It’s not always trendy but when it is, women love wearing it.

Circular

The circular skirt is also known as a skater skirt. It got its name because when made, it’s cut into a circle. There’s a waistband that holds the fabric and it sits directly at the waist. It comes in many different lengths, from short and flirty to long and flowy. It falls into the comfortable bottoms for women category, and it works with both sporty and elegant outfits, but it’s mostly used as active outdoor wear.

Dress

Dress pants are the perfect pair for women who are always on the go and want to look professional and elegant at the same time. They’re made of comfortable fabrics that often stretch in all 4 directions. This gives you a lot of freedom of movement. They have a zipper and pockets in the front. You can pair them with sweaters, tees, blouses, jackets, heels or sneakers to create the look you love the most.

Jeans

Jeans are the epitome of comfort. They haven’t left the fashion world since they were created. These women’s bottoms come in many styles, washes and colours. Some of them are skinny, black, wide-leg, boot cut, straight, mum, flared, cargo and many more. They work with any top no matter the style. You can pair it with blouses, shirts, tees, high heels, sneakers, loafers or anything else you find comfortable. They’re the go-to option for women on many occasions.

Leggings

Leggings are one of the most popular and most comfortable bottoms a woman can find. You can wear them in a more casual combination that won’t make you look sloppy. Leggings go well with sweatshirts, cardigans, tees and shirts. They can be made of different materials. Some will lean on the more elegant style, and some will fit the more casual fits.

Pegged

These pants are relaxed-fitting and have cropped, narrow legs. They taper and narrow at the ankle where they end. They’re very chic, especially because of how decorative the waist is. Some of them have an elastic band and some have a full cuff with buttons. Either way, they’ll pair nicely with shirts and crop tops depending on the occasion.

Chinos

Chino pants have a slim fit and a mid-rise waist. Length-wise, they’ll reach your ankle, but won’t go lower. If you want them to be even shorter, you can roll them up once or twice and make the gap between the shoe and the leg wider. Chinos come in many colours, from the classic black, white and brown, to yellow, red and green.

Wide-Leg

Wide-leg pants are very popular. They’ll make you feel cool and comfortable because of how flowy and cosy they are. They’ll make your legs look longer and your waist slimmer. They look amazing with high heels and a tucked-in shirt.

Culottes

Culottes are often knee-length or somewhat longer. They usually end between the calf and the knee and give you a wide-leg silhouette. They’re also known as capri pants, and you can wear them at casual or formal events. This depends on the material they’re made of. Their dramatic movement while you’re walking is what makes them special.
